Mid-Illini Credit Union celebrates 75th Anniversary

BLOOMINGTON, IL (March 24, 2015) — Mid-Illini Credit Union celebrated the cooperative’s 75th Anniversary with a member reception on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington.

Mid-Illini Credit Union (MICU) was founded by telephone company employees at GTI in January, 1940. Like most credit unions, Mid-Illini started when a few co-workers heard of another who had fallen on hard times and pooled their money to make a loan to their friend in need, and grew from there.

“It’s amazing, when you think about it,” said Mid-Illini President Tom Stewart. “When you look at MICU today and realize that this $50 million business started with a couple of guys who just wanted to help a friend, it’s a timeless testament to the power of a cooperative organization.”

Over 100 members and company partners attended MICU’s 75th Anniversary reception, which was held in conjunction with the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Members. Guests enjoyed refreshments, won some great prizes and even had a chance to see Mid-Illini’s original credit union charter.

“It was a happy coincidence that our anniversary celebration and annual meeting were scheduled on March 14,” said Julie Workman, Mid-Illini’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. “March 14 is also known, in some circles, as ‘Pi Day,’ since when written, the date mimics the mathematical constant known as pi, 3.14159. In honor of Pi Day, we set up the grand prize on our prize wheel game so we could give away pie. It was a big hit with our guests.”

“We also chose this high-profile event to announce the grand opening of our company store,” Workman continued. “Now, our members can buy Mid-Illini t-shirts, hoodies, travel mugs and tech gear anytime they want to!”

“Sometimes, even while helping our members and changing lives every day, it’s easy to forget that credit unions run as not-for-profit, member-owned cooperatives. We work hard to maintain the balance between running a business and delivering the products and services that will help our members the most. That’s been the foundation of our success for the past 75 years, and it remains so today,” said Stewart. “Credit unions may be the only financial institutions left that truly understand, respect and value the concept of banking that is truly of the people, by the people and for the people.”
