MSGCU Partners with State Representatives to Promote Financial Education to Local Students
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI (April 30, 2013) – Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) recently paired up with several local lawmakers to give school presentations about financial education as part of the Michigan Credit Union League’s (MCUL) 10th Annual Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge. MSGCU partnered with Rep. Anthony Forlini of District 24 at Iroquois Middle School in Macomb Township, Mich. on Monday, April 22 and with Rep. Marilyn Lane of District 31 at Fraser High School in Fraser, Mich. on Monday, April 29.
“Whether students are just starting to save money or are already working jobs, it is never too early to learn the value of financial education,” said Shannon McIntosh, Consumer Education Specialist at MSGCU. “The Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge is a great program and we were excited to once again work with lawmakers that are passionate about educating our future leaders about the importance of being financially savvy.”
At Iroquois Middle School, the Credit Union and Forlini presented to three eighth grade classes about the importance of money management.
“It is important to start young,” said Rep. Forlini. “You can never get that time back and even a day makes a difference. I taught my kids to start saving at least half of what they made through high school because it is so important to have a plan for your future.”
Then at Fraser High School, MSGCU and Lane teamed up for the presentation, “Surviving after High School.”
“Financial education is very important because before you know it, the decisions you make now will directly affect your lifestyle,” said Rep. Lane. “I went to Fraser High School and being back here reminds me of how time flies in the blink of an eye.”
Participating in the Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge is just one way MSGCU shows its dedication to promoting financial education to the communities it serves. The Macomb and Oakland County-based credit union also offers year-round workshops on a variety of topics, including home buying, understanding credit reports, financial aid for college students and a checking and lending session targeted specifically at teenagers.
