NEW YORK, NY (June 5, 2013) MCU has awarded $66,000 in scholarships to college-bound graduating high school seniors: eight memorial scholarship grants of $5,000 each and 13 grants of $2,000 each. The scholarships were presented to the recipients by MCU President/CEO Kam Wong at a special presentation reception at MCU’s headquarters on May 30th.

The recipients of the memorial scholarships are: Gabrielle Batista, Emma Briscoe, Akash Desai, David Fellows, Christopher Pinto, Ruth Tacandong, Joseph Varela and Zachary Zagorski.

“We are so pleased to recognize these exemplary students and provide them with scholarship money to continue their education and achieve their goals,” said MCU President/CEO Kam Wong. “MCU is deeply committed to both giving back to our community and to investing in our young people and their education. Our scholarship program is one way we are achieving these objectives and also recognizing and rewarding the outstanding academic efforts of these youth of our community. We congratulate everyone who received an MCU scholarship or grant.”

MCU Chairman of the Board Mark S. Brantley, Esq. and Board Secretary Shirley Jenkins, who chaired the Scholarship Committee, also congratulated the students and offered words of encouragement at the special reception:

“Work hard, focus on your goals and you will achieve your dreams – hopefully in pursuit of a credit union career,” said Mark S. Brantley, Esq.

Always remember where you came from and always give back to the community. You will get many rewards by giving back and we hope that you will always remain a member of the MCU family,” said Shirley Jenkins.

Eligibility for the MCU scholarships was open to an MCU member, a child or a grandchild of a member in good standing.  Selection was based on academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, letters of recommendation, and an essay expressing personal goals. The scholarships are part of MCU’s long-standing, larger corporate commitment to youth education and financial literacy across New York City.
