Northwest Federal CU Foundation offers $100K in college scholarships

Applications accepted online before April 15

HERNDON, VA (March 24, 2015) — Northwest Federal Credit Union recognizes that students heading off or returning to college in the fall face a struggle to meet educational expenses. To help, Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NWFCU, offers the Ben DeFelice scholarship program. This year, a total of $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded – 20 students who demonstrate the qualities of leadership, dedication and commitment in school, at home and in the community will each receive $5,000.

“Studies repeatedly have shown the value a college education brings to earning a living,” said Linda Rogus, Executive Director of the NWFCU Foundation. “But along with the monetary advantage, we also want to encourage students who have exhibited an ability and willingness to use their talents to strengthen their communities.”

The Ben DeFelice Scholarship program was begun in 2005 to honor Northwest Federal’s longest running Chairman of the Board, an office DeFelice held for 31 years. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded $654,000 in scholarships to 146 Ben DeFelice recipients. The program is funded by donations from Northwest Federal Credit Union, individual member donors, and a recent $10,000 corporate donation from NW Capital Management, Northwest Federal’s wholly-owned subsidiary. Applicants must be Northwest Federal members for at least one year and accepted into a full-time graduate, undergraduate or associate degree program. To apply, visit www.nwfcufoundation.org/scholarships and apply by April 15.
