PenFed employees present donations to Burrito Brigade, Eugene Mission, Veterans Legacy, and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families and Egan Warming Center Programs

SAN ANTONIO, VA (December 20, 2018) — PenFed Credit Union’s Eugene Service Center today announced charitable donations totaling $25,000 toBurrito Brigade, Eugene Mission, Veterans Legacy, and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Egan Warming Center Programs.PenFed employees and leadership met with each of the organizations and presented them with checks earlier this month.

These donations are part of PenFed’s commitment to giving $100,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Eugene area this year. Each quarter, PenFed’s Eugene Service Center employees select local charities that align with the credit union’s core values of giving back and making a difference in the communities PenFed serves.

“Since the Eugene Service Center began our quarterly charitable donations to Lane County charities, we have met with so many amazing organizations in our community. With each organization we meet, we learn something new,” said PenFed’s Senior Vice President of Operations Dave Silvey, who manages the Eugene Service Center. “We have all been humbled and touched by the dedicated efforts and impact these charities impart on the lives of those in need of their services. It is a gift and honor for all of us at PenFed to be in a position to give back in this way.”

PenFed leadership and employees traveled to the Eugene Mission, a nonprofit providing emergency services to the homeless, to present a donation check. The charity serves thousands of men, women and children each year by providing a place to sleep, food to eat, and holistic, long-term solutions that lead to the wellness of its guests.

During the visit, the group met with and received a tour of the facility from Eugene Mission Executive Director Sheryl Balthrop and Senior Director of Operations Dana Gray.

“PenFed’s gift makes a difference in the lives of some of our community’s most vulnerable members. We could not provide the level of service we do without the generous support of community partners like PenFed,” said Balthrop.

PenFed employees presented a donation check to Veterans Legacy Vice President Dan Buckwald and Board Member Jane Hart during their visit to the Eugene Service Center, where they had an opportunity to meet with PenFed employees and share more information about the nonprofit’s outreach efforts and volunteer opportunities. Veterans Legacy is a nonprofit organization that helps veterans andworksto provide integrated treatment in a rural setting for PTSD and other adjustment disorders, while continuing supportive therapy for associated co-morbidities such as drug and alcohol addictions.

After the presentation, Buckwald expressedhis sincere thanks to PenFed Credit Union for the generous donation in supportof local veterans in crisis.

Burrito Brigade was the third charitable organization selected by PenFed employees this quarter. Since 2014, the nonprofit has provided thousands of nutritious vegan meals to hungry individuals in Eugene and Springfield, Oregon—targeting two of the most food-insecure days, Saturday and Sunday. Burrito Brigade Board President and Donation Coordinator Jennifer Denson and Board Member Angela Godlasky met with PenFed employees at the Eugene Service Center and received a donation check.

“Burrito Brigade respects the dignity of each individual. By feeding a person, we are not only providing warmth and nourishment to the body, but also feeding the soul with the simple gifts of recognition and kindness,” said Denson. “This donation of $5,000 will help to provide sustenance to approximately 15,000 more individuals.”

Employees from the St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), SSVF, and Egan Warming Center programs visited the Eugene Service Center where they met with PenFed employees in a jointly held donation check presentation.

During the presentation with SVdP, PenFed employees were introduced to Chief Development Officer Eileen Sigler, SSVF Program Co-Manager Bonnie Haight, and Egan Director Shelley Corteville.

St. Vincent de Paul’s SSVF program helps veterans experiencing homelessness, and veterans at risk of becoming homeless, by providing the resources needed to become, or remain, permanently and stably housed. “PenFed’s gift allows SSVF to afford certain expenses that typical funding sources don’t cover, such as delinquent rent payments,” said Haight.

SVdP’s Egan Warming Center program opens several warming centers when temperatures drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The program was named in honor of Major Thomas Egan, a resident of Eugene, Oregon, who froze to death during an extreme winter cold period in 2008.

Egan Warming Center Director Shelley Corteville expressed her appreciation by stating, “This gift will be an enormous help – we are truly grateful!”

Since opening the service center in Eugene in 1996, PenFed has supported local veteran and community organizations. Since 2009, PenFed has contributed more than 1,544 hours in volunteer time to charitable organizations throughout Lane County. The Eugene Service Center began with 24 employees. Today, the Tysons, Va.-based credit union employs 494 in Oregon. The service center serves 1.7 million PenFed members worldwide.
