People helping people: Area credit unions join together to build Knoxville Habitat for Humanity home

OAK RIDGE, TN (May 11, 2018) — Tyra Gann currently lives in an apartment where she pays a monthly rent that increases each year. She has begun hearing constant gunshots in the area and says, “My first thought every time I hear gunshots is, where is my son?”  Fortunately for Tyra and her son, they will now have a safe home that she’s dreamed about for so long.

Tyra has invested 500 hours of “sweat equity” with the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity program through classes and volunteer work. She will soon build and purchase her home because of the partnership with Credit Unions Care.

Credit Unions Care is a collaborative effort bringing together Enrichment Federal Credit Union, ETMA Federal Credit Union, Knoxville Area Chapter of Credit Unions, Knoxville Law Enforcement Federal Credit Union, Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, New South Credit Union, ORNL Federal Credit Union, UT Federal Credit Union and Y-12 Federal Credit Union. The eight local Credit Unions are taking the Credit Union philosophy of “people helping people” to the next level by working together to build a Knoxville Habitat home.

“People helping people is not just the mission of credit unions across the nation, it’s a mentality that each of our team members take to heart in their daily work at the credit unions and in the way they support their communities through projects and events,” said Betsy Cunningham, Credit Unions Care spokesperson.

Tyra looks forward to making her future residence her “forever home” where she can enjoy her front porch, plant a garden and have a comfortable, safe home where her three grandchildren can play in the yard when they visit.  And with the help of Credit Unions Care, Tyra will make her longtime dream of homeownership a reality.

The media is invited to join Credit Union Cares for Blitz Day as volunteers from area credit unions join Tyra in building her new home on Saturday, May 19 starting at:

7:30 a.m. Construction kicks off

11:30 a.m. Construction pauses for lunch
