People’s Credit Union and Treasurer Raimondo Commend North Kingstown High School Students for Their Commitment to Financial Literacy
Financial Scholars Program provides innovative financial literacy platform for students
MIDDLETOWN, RI (June 6, 2013) On Friday, May 31, 2013, People’s Credit Union, school and civic officials, and General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo recognized North Kingstown High School students for the completion of an innovative financial literacy program.
The Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program, sponsored by People’s Credit Union, utilizes the EverFiTM platform, an online program that teachers can use as a valuable financial literacy tool which can easily integrate with a school’s curriculum. The platform is aligned to state standards and consists of ten modules covering critical financial literacy topics such as budgeting, credit health/scores, insurance, student loans, mortgages, taxes, and saving and investing. People’s Credit Union currently sponsors several schools throughout the state, at no cost to the participating schools.
“This program helps students understand the importance of making good, lifelong financial decisions,” said Raimondo, who participated in a Q & A with the students. “I am grateful to the teachers and administration for making financial empowerment a priority in the classroom.”
“People’s Credit Union has a long standing commitment of providing financial tools and resources to the communities we serve. Expanding our ability to reach teenagers and young adults through our Financial Scholars Program is another way in which we can give back to the community, which is a top priority for us,” said Ellen Ford, President & CEO of People’s.
“We advise each student to include EverFi certification in their resume,” said Rich Garland, a business and technology teacher at North Kingstown High School. “The financial literacy program supported by the Treasurer and People’s Credit Union, along with a tool to help deploy it, will give students a leg up, not just in managing personal wealth, but in the competitive work world.”
There is an additional benefit for students taking the Finance and Investments course at North Kingstown High. Last year the course was accepted in Rhode Island College’s Early Enrollment Program (EEP), awarding students with three college credits upon passing. It is a first for RIC’s EEP program and now with EverFi included, both students and teachers are clearly reaping the benefits.
People’s Credit Union serves members through six locations in Bristol, Middletown, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Wakefield.
