Redwood Credit Union asks youths, ‘What are you saving for?’

Saving Contests to Celebrate National Credit Union Youth Month in April

SANTA ROSA, CA (March 27, 2015) — Redwood Credit Union (RCU) is celebrating National Credit Union Youth Month in April with two new contests to promote good saving habits for children and teenagers. This year’s Youth Month theme is “Wild About Saving.”

RCU members ages 13 through 17 are invited to submit a 150-word description of their current saving plan and goal at www.redwoodcu.org/youthmonth. One winner from each branch, selected based on the demonstration of sound saving principles, will receive a $50 deposit to their savings account. An overall winner will also have their submission published in RCU’s Jr. Partner Post, a quarterly newsletter for RCU’s teen members.

Members 12 or younger can participate in a coloring contest by downloading and completing a “What Are You Saving For?” coloring sheet featuring RCU’s mascot Reddy the Redwood. Each coloring sheet features a word bubble where kids can write or draw what they are saving for, and one winner from each branch will have $50 deposited into their savings account.

Full contest rules and materials are available at redwoodcu.org/youthmonth, where participants can also share their completed submissions. Participants may also drop off their submissions at any local RCU branch. For a full list of RCU locations, visit redwoodcu.org/locations.

“Providing free financial education and encouraging financial wellness are simply part of who Redwood Credit Union is,” said Andy Ramos, RCU’s Senior Vice President of Member Experience. “It’s never too early to learn the importance of smart saving/spending habits, and because April is National Credit Union Youth Month and Financial Literacy Month, it’s the perfect time to share this message.”

RCU’s Youth Account program is divided into two groups: Jr. Rangers for children through age 12, and Jr. Partners for teenagers 13-17. Both age groups receive dividends on the funds they save, a free gift when opening an RCU savings account, quarterly newsletters, online account access, and a special website called Googolplex featuring educational games and articles.
