San Diego County Credit Union is sponsoring Student Health Initiative Story Contest
Contest is part of the annual Ben Vereen Awards that recognizes high school musical theater stars
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 26, 2015) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is proud to announce its second consecutive year of sponsorship of the Ben Vereen Awards, a two-part competition for high school students who are talented in musical theater, including vocal, dance and acting performance. Held in collaboration with Broadway/San Diego, the local competition will be narrowed to two talented students, a male and female, who will compete on a national level in June in New York City.
As part of this year’s awards, SDCCU is also sponsoring the Ben Vereen Student Health Initiative Story Contest. The contest is giving both high school students and high school drama departments the opportunity to tell their story for a chance to win $500 or $1,000.
The theme for the contest is “The Moment that I Changed My Life for the Better.” Either in an essay or video form, entrants can tell their story on how the arts has helped them overcome a personal problem, such as obesity, diabetes, low self-esteem or bullying.
The deadline to enter a submission is 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2015.

This gives every student in San Diego, whether or not their school has a formal theater department, the opportunity to participate in the Ben Vereen Awards,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck. “This program is just one of many ways our credit union supports education and our talented youth in San Diego.”
All currently enrolled San Diego County high school students, grades 9 through 12, are eligible to submit an essay/video. The top 5 individual entries will win $500.
In addition, high school theater departments are encouraged to collaborate on a project that includes creative writing or video. The top theater department entry will win $1,000.
