San Diego County Credit Union returns as sponsor of Countywide Spelling Bee
Annual language arts competition celebrates spelling proficiency
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 18, 2015) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is returning for the ninth consecutive year as a sponsor of the 46th annual U-T San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee, presented in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.
This year’s Spelling Bee will be held from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.
The Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 7th- and 8th-grade students in public or private schools with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children. The overall winner of the Spelling Bee will be awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and that student with his or her chaperone will win an all-expenses-paid trip to the Washington, D.C. area to compete in the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee competition held in May 2015.

Last year’s San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee began with 92 students and ended with one champion, Allison Grygar, a student at St. Michael’s School in Poway, Calif. San Diego has a history of making a strong showing at the national level. Francis Parker School’s Snigdha Nandipati won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, and Anurag Kashyap, who attended Meadowbrook Middle School in the Poway Unified School District, was the 2005 national champion. Nandipati was the countywide champion in both 2011 and 2012.
