Security Service Charitable Foundation donates $5,000 to Catholic Charities Project Cool

Donation provides fans for seniors during the summer months

SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 8, 2020) — The Security Service Charitable Foundation is helping seniors stay comfortable during hot summer months by donating $5,000 to Catholic Charities for its Project Cool program. The donation will be used to purchase box fans for more than 300 seniors at no cost.

“Project Cool is a vital service for seniors,” said Lizzy Nemeth, executive director for Catholic Charities San Antonio. “The program is able to quickly respond and accomplish the main goal of circumventing heat-related illness and death by providing 20-inch box fans to seniors and disabled individuals. Thanks to this generous donation, we are able to assist an even greater number of individuals than in the past.”

The box fans provide a low-cost means for individuals on a limited income to alleviate heat by decreasing the usage of air conditioning, or providing an alternative when air conditioning is not available. Project Cool continues to be an important service in Bexar County, especially during the summer months.

“South Texas summers are rough on everyone, especially those without air conditioning,” said Brandy Ralston-Lint, senior vice president of corporate communications for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “Excessive heat without a means to cool off is life-threatening. Providing free fans to the elderly in our community helps enhance and save lives.”

Any senior, age 60 or older, is eligible to receive a fan. Available for pick up at a convenient location within their zip code, seniors simply show a photo ID to verify their age and they are given a fan. Homebound seniors are encouraged to call for assistance so that a fan can be delivered directly to their home.

The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union’s market areas.
