MADISON, WI (September 12, 2013) — The Credit Union Executives Society is pleased to announce that Kim Sponem, CEO/president of Summit Credit Union, Madison, Wis., has accepted an appointment to serve on the CUES Board of Directors effective Oct. 1.

“Kim will be a strong addition to the CUES Board,” said CUES Chair Teresa Y. Freeborn, president/CEO of Xceed Financial Credit Union, El Segundo, Calif. “She is known for leading innovative initiatives at her credit union, and we look forward to including her creative thoughts in board discussions.”

Sponem became CEO/president of Summit CU in 2010. She had previously led Great Wisconsin Credit Union as president/CEO before its merger with Summit CU in 2008. She joined Great Wisconsin CU (formerly CUNA Credit Union) in 1995, and served as VP/marketing and executive vice president before being appointed interim president/CEO in 2001, and accepting the top position in 2002.

Sponem will fill the remainder of the term being left vacant by Gerianne “Winky” Burks, CCE, retired president/CEO of Northwest Federal Credit Union, Herndon, Va., who is resigning from the CUES Board, effective Sept. 30. Burks started at Northwest FCU as a teller in 1971, progressed through the institution’s staff ranks, and served as the CU’s chief executive for the last five years of her career.

“We appreciate Winky’s service and commitment to CUES and its members and wish her well in her retirement,” Freeborn said.
