St. Helens Community FCU Awards Scholarships to Four Local Students

Outstanding St. Helens, Scappoose students receive funds to help pay for college

ST. HELENS, OR (June 13, 2013) St. Helens Community Federal Credit Union (SHCU) announced today the winners of its 2013 SHCU Scholarship Program, which rewards qualified students for demonstrating academic excellence and citizenship. Three St. Helens High School students received college scholarships—Josiah Thurston ($1,000), Tavin Boynton ($500) and Andrew Gray ($500). Jesse Hanson from Scappoose High School also received $500.

“There were many qualified applicants this year, but these students stand out for their hard work and community involvement,” said SHCU President and CEO Brooke Van Vleet.  “It’s a privilege to help Josiah, Tavin, Andrew and Jesse take the next step forward in their education and personal development.”

To qualify for a SHCU scholarship, a student must be a primary member of the credit union with a personal account, provide official copies of high school transcripts and complete an online financial education course, “Guides to Independence.”  Students must also submit an essay and two reference letters from school, work or community group mentors.

“Thank you for your investment in my education,” said Josiah Thurston, who serves as a student teller at the credit union’s St. Helens High School branch.  “Without your help and the help of others, I would be unable to attend college and pursue my dreams.”
