Sunshine Little League Opening Day unveils new facilities & equipment donated by Wheelhouse Credit Union
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 15, 2022) — Sunshine Little League’s Opening Day was a special celebration for the long-time southeast San Diego youth sports organization, thanks to some help from Wheelhouse Credit Union (Wheelhouse). After suffering a devastating series of robberies and vandalism, the League’s 2022 Opening Day unveiled all-new equipment, along with a refurbished snack bar, equipment storage facility, and new security system provided by the credit union.
Sunshine Little League has provided youth baseball in southeast San Diego for 64 years, teaching sportsmanship, leadership, perseverance, and healthy activity in underserved communities. In 2020, League facilities were repeatedly vandalized, with thousands of dollars in equipment taken and repairs needed, putting its future in question. Through an outpouring of support from Wheelhouse, local community members and volunteers, the League was able to replace and upgrade its equipment and facilities to continue to serve the needs of local youth through baseball.
Wheelhouse President/CEO Lisa Paul-Hill said, “After nearly nine decades of serving San Diegans, we are more committed than ever to supporting the needs of our local community. After hearing about the losses Sunshine Little League had suffered, we knew we needed to jump in to assist this treasured organization and its amazing volunteers. We are honored to work with the League to ensure it continues to provide a safe and healthy environment for local youth to participate in the time-honored Little League tradition.”
Sunshine Little League President Jose Lopez said, “We are so excited and thrilled to have Wheelhouse Credit Union’s support of Sunshine Little League during a very challenging time. By donating new equipment, renovating our Snack Bar, and installing security equipment, Wheelhouse has played a critical role in helping us return to a fully functional baseball season, with a record level of players participating this year. In addition to unveiling its new facilities, Opening Day activities included a bike give-away sponsored by the credit union along with face painting, food, and other festivities.
