The Best Local Theatre Teacher Award ballot is open

As part of the Ben Vereen Awards, SDCCU is sending the winning teacher to the 2015 Jimmy Awards in New York

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 26, 2015) — San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, is asking the community to nominate and vote for the Best Local Theatre Teacher. The Best Local Theatre Teacher Award is part of the Ben Vereen Awards, a two-part local competition for high school students who are talented in musical theater, including vocal, dance and acting performance. The winning teacher will receive a trip for two to New York to attend the 2015 Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

“SDCCU is proud to honor theatre teachers and their dedication to the arts and San Diego youth. The high school musical theatre students competing in the Ben Vereen Awards could never reach their full potential without the invaluable instruction and direction brought to them by their talented and hardworking teachers,” said SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck.

Students, parents, family members and friends can nominate and vote for a deserving theatre teacher in San Diego County who has made a positive difference in their life, the life of a child or in the community. To nominate and vote, visit facebook.com/sdccu and select the “Best Local Theatre Teacher” tab. Once a teacher is nominated, the voting begins! Voters can return to the page daily through April 8, 2015. Nominations and voting will close on April 8, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. The Best Local Theatre Teacher Award will be presented at the 2015 Ben Vereen Awards on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego. For the official rules, visit sdccu.com/sweepstakes.

The 2015 Ben Vereen Awards, sponsored by SDCCU and held in collaboration with Broadway/San Diego, is a unique scholarship opportunity for talented high school students who have chosen to pursue a career in musical theatre. This is the second year that Broadway/San Diego is producing the competition locally—it is the local branch of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards which has been in existence since 2009. Both the local and national competitions are programs of the Nederlander Organization.

Candidates for Best Musical, Best Actor and Best Actress, will be selected from onsite adjudications of high school musicals at their home venues during the spring semester of the 2014/2015 school year. These nominees will compete at the Ben Vereen Awards San Diego Competition which will take place at 5 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2015 at the Balboa Theatre. At the Ben Vereen Awards Southwest Region Competition, which will take place in Tucson, Ariz., finalists from the San Diego Competition will join finalists from Arizona. The top Best Actor nominee and the top Best Actress nominee selected at the Southwest Competition, will move on to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City, for a chance to compete for a $10,000 prize toward a college scholarship.
