Three DeKalb County High School Seniors Win Share of $12,500 in Georgia United Credit Union Scholarships

DECATUR, GA (April 3, 2013) – Georgia United Credit Union is excited to announce the winners for their 2013 scholarship programs.  A total of $12,500 was awarded through the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship program and the Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship program and disbursed to thirteen high school seniors.  Thanks to all the high school seniors who entered this year’s competition as we had a record number of entries!

This is the 19th year that Georgia United has given the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and the 6th year for the John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship. A total of approximately $212,500 has been awarded to high school seniors during the tenure of both programs.  Recipients are chosen based on an essay competition with consideration given to academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities.  The top winners for 2013 were Lindsey Vinson of Westminster Christian Academy in Watkinsville with Tasneem Akbar of Druid Hills High School in DeKalb County as first runner-up.  Two additional DeKalb County high school seniors also received $500 runner up scholarships. Tasneem Akbar, Decatur, GA

Tasneem Akbar of Druid Hills High School was this year’s first runner up for the Vernon E. Carne Scholarship and recipient of $2,000. Already accepted to the University of Georgia, Tasneem is an International Baccalaureate student, a member of her school’s Beta Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and is a Governor’s Honors Finalist. She has received Music Awards in Orchestra and Violin, received a perfect score on the Georgia Writing Test and was selected to the  CIEE program as a summer exchange student to South Korea.  A Youth Leadership DeKalb graduate, Tasneem is a Tae Kwon Do 3rd degree black belt and active community volunteer. She is the daughter of Abdul and Ibtisam Akbar of Decatur.

Zoe-Alanah Robert, Decatur, GA

Zoe-Alanah Robert of Lakeside High School was a $500 Vernon E. Carne Scholarship recipient.  Already accepted to Stanford University, Zoe-Alanah is a 4.0 GPA student and a member of the Lakeside HS Swim Team.  Voted “Best All Around” Senior Superlative, Zoe-Alanah was also a Governor’s Honors Program participant, President of the National Honor Society, Co-President of the Key Club, a Student Government Senator and a member of the Spanish National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Michel and Diana Robert of Decatur.

Brittany Williams, SW DeKalb High School, Decatur, GA

Brittany Williams of SW DeKalb High School was a $500 Vernon E. Carne Scholarship recipient.  Already accepted to Duke University, Brittany has a 4.2 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Beta Club, President of the Student Government Association, Lacrosse and Softball Teams at her school.  A Simon Scholar, member of Youth Leadership DeKalb and Star Student for her school, Brittany is Treasurer of Health Occupation Students of America and President of her AKA Debutante Chapter. She is the daughter of Travis and Kenya Williams of Stone Mountain.
