3 vehicle maintenance tips that can save you money

Over the years, you’ve probably been told some things you should do for your car that you didn’t do but should have. You’ve also probably been told some things you shouldn’t do to your car that you didn’t do but probably should have. Here are three maintenance tips (including some busted myths) for your vehicle that will save you a wad of cash…

Don’t get your oil changed so often: Most oil change places love to slap that little sticker on the inside of your windshield to remind you to get your oil changed in either 3 months or 3,000 miles. But the truth is, most oil is rated to last a lot longer than that. According to Edmund’s, oil chemistry and engine technology have come a long way in recent years, so the 3 months or 3,000 miles suggestion is a little outdated. Automakers today recommend you get your oil changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. If you’re not putting a lot of highway miles on your car, you’ll save a bundle on oil changes.

Don’t warm your car up in the driveway: In some states, it’s actually illegal to let your car run unattended. This is good, because today’s engines actually warm up better by being driven. The quicker your car’s engine warms up, the sooner it’ll be more efficient. Plus, you won’t risk having your car stolen while you’re inside fixing your morning coffee. Just make sure not to work your car too hard too fast. Avoid putting the pedal to the metal until your car has had a chance to warm up.

Keep an eye on your tires: If at all possible, make sure you replace your tires four at a time. The best way to get the most life out of your tires is to get them rotated regularly. One easy way to do this is to have them rotated every time you get your oil changed. Tires aren’t cheap and you’ll enjoy getting a nice long life out of them.
