The beginning of a new year is upon us and there is no better time to work on improving your leadership skills. To help you get a head start on the new year, here are 5 skills to master.
1. Demonstrate to others active listening. Paying attention shows others you value what they are saying. Additionally, eliminating any distractions that could draw your focus away from the speaker shows them respect. Engage in conversation with meaningful input.
2. Leadership presence. Projecting confidence and authenticity improves the way you get attention in a room. Working with your teams will provide insight to their day-to-day. That can go a long way to help you better understand how they work and suggest improvements that can be made; and it helps you keep your finger on the pulse of the business.
3. Time Management. Figure out where you wasted time in 2016. Find a time-organization style that works for you and focus on applying it during the new year. Build a schedule that is adaptive and guides you towards better time management. Outline your goals, prioritize them and SET DEADLINES! You may find you were wasting more time than you thought!
4. Have an open mind. As a leader, you should work hard to engage in dialog with those who challenge you. It will help you grow. Always remember that one of the most important traits of a leader is a willingness to discuss something with an open mind and to never stop learning.
5.Know your limits. Knowing what you excel at and what you don’t is part of what makes you a good leader. Total mastery isn’t necessary to be great, a willingness to learn and grow are what sets you apart.
