Advocacy keeps interchange bill out of Senate NDAA

It’s been a week since Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., threatened to hold up the Senate FY24 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in an attempt to attach the big box interchange bill onto legislation that funds our service members.

The Senate passed its NDAA without the interchange amendment late Thursday.

This is in major part due to the bold, 360-degree advocacy from CUNA and Leagues and the incredible response from credit unions and their members sending their Senators nearly 25,000 messages of opposition in the past week, and more than 70,000 since the bill was introduced.

Despite all the other efforts pushing this bill, the credit union message resonated to such an extent that the bill’s sponsors withdrew their attempt at an amendment. CUNA, Leagues, and credit unions together told policymakers this bill would harm access to credit, data security, and more.
