Building a better tomorrow with the #bestclassever

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the National Credit Union Foundation's CUDE program in Tampa, Florida. Throughout those five days, we explored the history of the credit union movement, and the development issues impacting our members and communities, discussing ways we can take action.

Trust the process

I was thrilled to attend DE and excited for the opportunity to collaborate with my peers. It's truly inspiring to be surrounded by passionate individuals, all driven by a shared goal: promoting financial wellbeing for all and ensuring our credit unions remain top of mind. As the teams were formed and we all introduced ourselves to one another, I could already tell this was going to be the #BestClassEver.

We set aside our titles to foster equity and inclusivity. As we engaged in conversation and began the initial activities, the teams built trust. We embraced vulnerability within our small groups, creating a solid foundation that allowed us to fully trust the process.

An immersive approach to learning and leadership

The Credit Union Development Education program transcends traditional learning—it’s about reshaping perspectives, strengthening connections, and discovering ways to make a greater impact. I always knew credit unions were special, but participating in this program and revisiting its foundational principles has been enlightening.

Through engaging discussions, practical exercises, and real-world case studies, I felt energized by the passion in the room. It demonstrated a clear commitment to advancing financial wellness and promoting economic mobility for both members and communities.

We explored the development issues that prevent people from achieving financial freedom and discussed how credit unions are uniquely positioned to address them. We are aware that it is now more important than ever to tell our stories, extend our reach, and advocate for our industry. After all, financial wellbeing for all keeps our purpose constant.

A lifelong journey

I’ve spent my entire career in credit unions. I began working at a small credit union while in college and am now on the board of that credit union. I now have the privilege of connecting with thought leaders around the globe at CUInsight.

Completing the CUDE program isn’t just about earning a certification—it’s about embracing the cooperative movement and helping people with purpose. It’s about leading with empathy, recognizing that our mission sets us apart, and relentlessly driving it forward.
