Highlights from the AACUL Winter Conference

Returning to the American Association of Credit Union Leagues’ Winter Conference allowed me to step back into a vibrant hub of collaboration and credit union verve. As always, the meetings brought together an impressive array of industry leaders, including League presidents and chairs; as well as advocates, communicators, and executives from America’s Credit Unions and other system organizations, all dedicated to advancing the credit union movement.

The conference kicked off Tuesday morning with an opening message from Brad Miller, President of AACUL, who set the tone for an agenda packed with strategic dialogue and bold ideas.

Highlights included a forward-looking update on the Credit Union House Modernization Project; a League Presidents’ discussion with Matt Stanek of TruStage on their continued partnership; and an engaging session where League Presidents brainstormed “Moonshot Ideas” to transform advocacy, communication, and collaboration.

Networking opportunities during breaks and meals over the course of the conference further enhanced the experience, allowing attendees to connect, exchange ideas, and strengthen partnerships in a relaxed and collegial atmosphere.

Advocacy and collaboration took center stage throughout the day, with sessions facilitated by Austin De Bey, AACUL’s Director of Advocacy, and other association and industry executives. These discussions explored federal and state advocacy strategies, with the 2025 Federal Advocacy Plan emerging as a key focus.

Ryan Donovan, President of the Council of Federal Home Loan Banks, shared insights on navigating challenges and seizing opportunities with the incoming administration, while Cathie Mahon, President/CEO of Inclusiv, outlined how Leagues could help credit unions secure grants from the $1.87 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

Other sessions delved into advocacy topics and celebrated the impactful work of League foundations in creating advocacy wins.

A thought-provoking DEI panel, moderated by Renee Sattiewhite, President/CEO of AACUC, highlighted strategies and challenges for credit unions as they work to expand diversity within the movement and better serve marginalized communities.

To close Wednesday afternoon, Gigi Hyland, Executive Director of the National Credit Union Foundation, offered a heartfelt farewell, reflecting on her remarkable career and reminding attendees to honor their roots and harness the power of collaboration.

Thursday’s agenda promises more insightful content and an excellent lineup of speakers.

I am heading home today with a renewed sense of purpose and appreciation for the credit union system’s collective strength. The dedication of this group of leaders, the exchange of strategic ideas, the authentic and sometimes difficult conversations, and the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues make this event one that I have felt privileged to attend.
