Home services you’re wasting money on

It’s nice when you’re able to afford to pay someone to do something you don’t want to do for yourself. But, as nice as those services are, some of them are a giant waste of your hard-earned money. Sometimes it’s something you can’t do on your own (like empty your septic tank). And sometimes it’s just something you don’t want to do (like cutting your grass). As much as you don’t want to, it might be time to decide to save money and do some of those things on your own. Here are four services you shouldn’t be paying for…

Pest control: Bugs can be annoying and you definitely don’t want them in your house, but having an exterminator come out to the house every few months can be really expensive. Why not go to Lowe’s, get a big jug of ORTHO Home Defense, and take care of the problem yourself.

Interior painting: Having the outside of your house painted is one thing, but if you’re paying someone to paint the inside of your home, you’re probably spending a lot more money than you need to be. The majority of your bill for a paint job is labor, so you’re better off doing that part yourself and you can end up saving up to 75-80% on your project.

Landscaping:If you’re planning on completely changing the look of your yard or adding fountains or other large landscape pieces, I completely understand hiring a professional. But if you’re paying for someone to cut your lawn every weekend, you can save a lot by making your 16-year-old do it. If you don’t have a teenager and you can’t do the job yourself, throw a few bucks to a neighbor’s kid and you’ll still save a lot compared to what you’d be paying a lawn service to do the job.
