NCUA yet to adopt gender-neutral marker for documents

The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) has not adopted the gender-neutral “X” marker for its forms, but will use any new versions of government-wide forms created and managed by other agencies, such as the Office of Personnel Management or the Office of Management and Budget, when it is appropriate, an agency spokesperson said this week.

Some government agencies have decided to start implementing neutral gender identification markers. For instance, President Biden announced in March that U.S. citizens would be permitted, starting on April 11, to select “X” as their gender on passport applications. He added at the time the option will become available for other forms of documentation in 2023.

Biden further noted the State Department was setting a precedent as the first federal government agency to offer that gender marker.

The Response from Other Agencies

Some agencies have followed suit. On March 31, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced it would be allowing people to select the non-binary “X” gender in questions that are part of the intake process for filing discrimination complaints.
