Mark Wolff introduced CUNA’s President and CEO, Bill Cheney during the orientation for first time attendees. This year’s numbers are outstanding. Over 600 first year participants are expected to attend. Of those 600, there appeared to be at least 200 people in attendance for this orientation. Bill mentioned that during his inaugural year (last year) as President and CEO, the orientation was conducted around one table. That is a tremendous increase in attendance.

The orientation covered all of the topics that you’d expect to be discussed. The physical layout for GAC, items included with registration, pointed out that there are over 300 vendors, and of course the keynote speakers.  A new item made it to the table this year. CUNA created an App for the conference. The app can be installed on your Smartphone or IPAD. Features include: Maps, list of Exhibitors, Sponsors, the schedule of events, a twitter feed, and contact information. Attendees were all very receptive to the new App.

Bill made it a point to state that this is a very important meeting.  Participants should “Storm the Hill” and talk to their members of Congress. This is the largest trade show in the financial services industry.

After Mr. Cheney’s presentation, Mark Wolff pointed out a few interesting fun facts about the Convention Center:

  1. The Convention Center is the 2nd largest building in D.C. With the Ronald Reagan building being the only other facility that is larger.
  2. In 2008, the Convention Center held its first wedding and Bar Mitzvah.
  3. Over 38,000 tons of steel were used in development of the facility.
  4. And last but certainly not least, during construction, the hole created was the largest hole in the ground in the entire western hemisphere.

This year’s first time attendees are sure in for a treat. The conference is guaranteed to be an eye opener into the credit union political arena.  So much knowledge will be shared. And of course the fellowship is unequal to that of any other conference.
