NAFCU’s 2014 Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee Conference kicks off in Hawaii

MAUI, HI (May 14, 2014)  Credit union volunteers from across the country are gathering today in Maui, Hawaii, to kick off the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU2014 Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee Conference. Attendees will get an in-depth understanding of board fiduciary responsibilities and the role of the supervisory committee and will network with their peers. The conference runs through Friday, May 16, at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa and is open to NAFCU members and nonmembers.

“With the continuing challenges facing credit unions, it is vital that board and supervisory committee members have the information this conference offers so they can help protect their institutions’ bottom lines,” said NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger. “The program’s sessions and speakers will help attendees prepare to lead their credit unions soundly into the future.”

Berger is scheduled to present a “Washington Update” focusing on the increasingly complex regulatory and legislative environment affecting credit union operations. NAFCU Executive Vice President and COO Anthony Demangone will also speak to attendees about the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), boards’ fiduciary duties and interest rate risk.

Tim Harrington, Sarah Michel and Ross Dawson will provide the conference’s keynote presentations. Harrington is the president of TEAM Resources and will focus his address on the successful leadership traits that the late, Academy Award winning actor Jimmy Stewart exhibited in combat during World War II. Michel is a networking expert who will explain the four human interaction styles using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment and how this information can help improve connections with one’s peers. Dawson is a technology strategist and will present ways that online technologies can be used to improve a credit union’s efficiency.

Conference attendees will also get to hear from other industry leaders, including:

  • Geoff Bacino, former NCUA Board member and principal of Bacino & Associates;
  • Bill Handel, vice president of research and development at Raddon Financial Group;
  • William McGuire, Ph.D., president and CEO of McGuire Performance Solutions;
  • John Milazzo, former CEO of Campus Federal Credit Union;
  • Mike Mossel, principal of Risk Advisory Services;
  • Ben Rogers, research director at Filene Research Institute;
  • Randall Romes and Greg Schwartz of CliftonLarsonAllen LLP;
  • Frank Serina, vice president of risk management and security services at Members 1st Federal Credit Union; and
  • Tom Telford, principal of Burns-Fazzi Brock.

Attendees have the opportunity to earn NAFCU financial literacysupervisory committee, and Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) training certificates. Attendees can also earn continuing professional education (CPE) credits for CPAs.
