MADISON, Wis.—The African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) has announced it will offer a scholarship named for Fred Johnson, president/CEO, Credit Union Executives Society.

“The ‘Fred Johnson CEO Institute Scholarship’ will be awarded to a member of AACUC to attend CUES’ CEO Institute. The scholarship will cover up to half of the tuition annually,” said Sheilah Montgomery, CCE, AACUC chair, president/CEO, Credit Union of Atlanta. “It’s with great pleasure we announce this scholarship in honor of Fred’s outstanding leadership. Fred is truly the embodiment of the cooperative spirit; he has been a supporter of our organization since our beginnings. AACUC wants to follow Fred’s example in giving back, and to carry on Fred’s ‘people helping people’ philosophy.”

“I’m greatly touched by this announcement,” said Johnson. “CEO Institute, our flagship educational program, means a great deal to me. Knowing a scholarship in my name will help credit union leaders reach their educational goals and attend three of the top U.S. business schools is such an honor and privilege.”

Johnson also recently announced he will contribute the other fifty percent of the tuition, and that CUES will provide airfare, for the scholarship winner.

Johnson will be retiring from CUES on December 31, 2012, after 23 years at the helm. Among many other accomplishments, his leadership saw the development of CEO Institute, which is a challenging academic and leadership program held in one-week segments over three years. This year’s dates are:

  • CEO Institute I: Strategic Planning, April 15-20, University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School, Philadelphia
  • CEO Institute II: Organizational Effectiveness, April 22-27, Johnson at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
  • CEO Institute III: Strategic Leadership Development, May 6-11, University of Virginia, Darden School of Business, Charlottesville, Va.
