Affinity Plus community involvement takes root through community garden volunteerism

ST. PAUL, MN (June 10, 2015) — Employees of Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union dug deep into the community last week, organizing a group of volunteers and members to help out with the Moorhead Community Heritage Garden project. Clad in the credit union’s distinctive purple t-shirts, the Affinity Plus volunteers spent the afternoon at the garden site working with others from the community to prepare the grounds, weed, plant and water perennials, and other activities.

The participation in this event is an extension of Affinity Plus’ award-winning “Plus it Forward” campaign, in which more than 500 employees dedicate eight full hours of volunteer time every October to scatter kindness in its communities throughout the state.

Moorhead’s Heritage Garden is being developed near the site of an old decommissioned power plant along the Red River and adjacent to Woodlawn Park. The plan seeks to recreate an environment that pays homage to the power plant while also acknowledging the important role it played in the development of the city of Moorhead. The garden’s sculpted landscapes, garden beds, native plants, and sculptural elements will draw people to the site and serve as a conduit between the river parkway and Woodlawn Park.

“This was an awesome opportunity to show our community spirit, help beautify the Moorhead community and support the great works of our members who were integral in developing the Heritage Garden Project,” said Jon Stock, Manager of Moorhead’s two Affinity Plus branches.

Additional coverage of the event can be seen on local KVRR News.
