Andrews Federal Credit Union sponsors Boy Scouts to Bastogne

SUITLAND, MD (January 17, 2018) — Andrews Federal Credit Union sponsored the members of Boy Scout Troop #325 to travel to Bastogne, Belgium for the 73rd Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge and the 40th Bastogne Remembrance Walk.  The main events started off in the morning with the remembrance walk (7, 14, or 20 kilometers), followed by a parade with a couple surviving World War II veterans, the US Ambassador to NATO, and other dignitaries.

A ceremony was held at the Bastogne City Hall where nuts are thrown from the balcony signifying General McAuliffe’s response to the German demand for the American’s to surrender. The boy scouts camped out over the weekend, walked the 20 kilometer walk on Saturday, and finished in time to witness the nut ceremony.

“It is a privilege to be able to provide the funding for the Boy Scout Troop to be able to witness and take part in the remembrance ceremony,” said Joshua Barrett, Andrews Federal Branch Manager. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most people and I am glad that we could help make that happen for them.”
