Central Credit Union of Florida chronicles an inspiring journey as 2022 marks 60 years of service in Florida

PENSACOLA, FL (February 15, 2022) — 2022 marks the 60th Anniversary for Central Credit Union of Florida and commemorates a history of growth, collaboration, and community partnership. Chartered in January of 1962 as West Florida Central Credit Union, it became one of three Central Credit Unions established by the state of Florida. Central served other credit union employees and officials in the West Florida Area. In 1971 the credit union achieved the milestone of hiring their first paid employee and establishing the first West Florida Central Credit Union office.

“When, in 1969, the State of Florida approved the addition of other credit unions and SEGs, the organization grew rapidly and was able to offer more services,” stated the credit union regarding the major turning points in the history of the organization. “Additionally, in 1978, Jacksonville Central Credit Union was merged with us, and we changed our name to Central Credit Union of Florida to better represent the entire geographical area. The credit union doubled in size as a result of this merger.” The next two decades witnessed an explosion of financial services that credit unions could offer resulting in even more historic growth for Central Credit Union of Florida.

In June 1982 Central Credit Union of Florida was made the first community credit union in the state of Florida. A historic moment in which the credit union gave people in the community the opportunity to join a credit union without having a common bond, such as an employer, enabling membership based on residence within 100 miles of the credit union. The evolution continued in 2006 when the credit union joined the Shared Branching Network and when in 2007 the credit union acquired Endeavor FCU (formerly Telco of FL Credit Union), again doubling in size, and adding two additional branches.

More recently in 2018, Pensacola L&N Credit Union was merged into Central allowing the membership to expand by over 1,100. Central’s field membership is now open to anyone living, working, or attending school in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Bay, Walton, Washington, and Duval counties in Florida. The credit union’s history exemplifies its commitment to serve its members’ needs “beyond their expectations” and ensures a future of continued community work and “providing financial opportunities that last a lifetime.”
