Clark County Board of Commissioners Honors SCE Credit Union

Financial Education Makes Its Mark on Summer Business Institute Program

IRWINDALE, CA (July 27, 2022) — SCE Credit Union (SCE FCU) was recognized and honored on July 19 through a public proclamation made by the Clark County Board of Commissioners for the credit union’s role in providing financial literacy and education to shape the minds of youth in entrepreneurship during the 2022 Summer Business Institute Program (SBI Program).

“We were extremely honored to be involved in such an important endeavor, contributing to the future of local high school sophomores, juniors and seniors,” said SCE Credit Union President and CEO Jennifer Oliver. “Local credit unions play an important and foundational role in the financial lives of residents and business entrepreneurs everywhere. We are very proud to pay-it-forward to the next generation of households, workers, and leaders by educating youth and young adults on how to navigate some of the most important decisions they will encounter throughout their lives.”

Each year, dozens of local business leaders in the community participate in a collaborative SBI Program partnership between local government and Clark County School District. The program provides local high school students the opportunity to experience a meaningful and educational summer, which supports the continuation of their academic and professional careers beyond high school.

In its chambers, the Clark County Board of Commissioners expressed sincere appreciation for SCE Credit Union’s significant contribution toward the community’s youth through partnering and participating in the SBI Program. SCE Credit Union was honored to have representatives onsite to accept the board’s proclamation.

The 2022 SBI Program is a paid summer internship for incoming high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Through collaborative partnerships, student participants are paid $10.50 an hour for an eight-week internship in fields ranging from law and medicine to architecture and education, including business mentoring, life skills training, financial management, and a civic engagement project.

All participants may be eligible for college scholarships at the close of the program. Student applicants are required to complete a listing of their career choices, submit letters of recommendation, write an essay and provide transcripts. The program generates hundreds of applications annually. If accepted, every attempt is made to match the intern with an employer and mentor within their career interest.

“Our credit union appreciates the opportunity to partner with local government officials and leaders in these types of programs that are so integral to our local youth — the future of our communities,” Oliver added. “We are here to serve our members and the local community.”
