Credit unions unite for children with the holiday icon campaign

(December 20, 2013) — Christmas shoppers might have checked most purchases off their lists, but there is still plenty of time for them to participate in the spirit of giving — and for an incredibly noble cause. Credit Unions throughout the U.S. are partnering under Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids) to raise money for local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals this season through the Holiday Icon campaign.

What is the Holiday Icon Campaign? Credit unions serve as invaluable organizations within their communities, and the Holiday Icon Campaign is a perfect example of how these not-for-profit institutions impact the lives of individuals beyond their branches.

Organized by CU4Kids, the Holiday Icon campaign offers the opportunity for participating credit unions to raise funds for their Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Colorful “icons” are available at no cost to institutions, and their members are encouraged to provide a one dollar donation in exchange for having their icons with their names displayed proudly in branches.

The program ends December 31, 2013.

Amy McGraw, Vice President of Marketing for Tropical Financial Credit Union, said, “We participated because it’s a perfect way for our employees and members to show the community spirit of the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people.’”

McGraw added, “As credit unions we are part of a cooperative network of people where we often make it our mission to help make a huge impact in our members’ lives one person at a time. The CU4Kids program aims to make a huge impact in the lives of sick children ‘one dollar at a time.’”

In just a few short weeks, Tropical Financial Credit Union raised over $500 in employee and member donations, as well as several large boxes filled with toys.

For Credit Union Members – Benefits of Participating

Every single dollar donated to the campaign goes directly to each branch’s local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. A dollar doesn’t seem like much money, but it goes a long way towards helping hospitalized children in their recovery. According to the CU4Kids website, donations can cover the costs of expenses such as:

Wee Pee sized diapers for babies weighing less than 800 grams, cost: $0.41
Preemie sized diapers for babies weighing up to 4 pounds, cost: $0.50
Size 1 blood pressure cuffs for the smallest child patients, cost: $1.08
Baby blankets in the Neonatal and Infant Critical Care Unit, cost: $4.00
