CU Business Group to host Virtual Educational Conference

PORTLAND, OR (September 4, 2020) — CU Business Group will host a virtual conference this October. As the largest business services CUSO in the industry, CUBG has pivoted quickly to replace their in-person conference events which have been offered every year since 2007.

The conference will include keynote speakers, breakouts, roundtable discussions, and a virtual exhibit hall. Sessions will focus on commercial services education for credit unions with training for business services staff as well as credit union executives, internal auditors, branch staff, and the Board and Business Loan Committee.

“We are excited to offer this virtual event which will make education on commercial services more accessible to everyone at the credit union – not just the commercial lending staff,” explained Larry Middleman, CUBG President/CEO.

The conference will feature top speakers in the industry, including NCUA Board Member Todd Harper, CUNA Senior Economist Mike Schenk, and attorneys Nema Daghbandan and Melissa Martorella of Geraci Law Firm.

Attendees will also hear success stories from credit union peers at Mountain America, Envista, and Point West credit unions.

Featured topics will include:

  • Managing your loan portfolio in today’s turbulent economic times
  • COVID’s impact on loan loss reserves
  • New credit risk management guidance from NCUA
  • Adding treasury management services to boost your deposit program
  • Serving your community through cost-efficient microlending
  • Success in target marketing
  • Effective use of social media to grow market share

Along with the pivot to an online event, this year’s conference has another new twist. “A successful commercial services program includes involvement from a number of roles throughout the credit union – from the branch staff to the executive team and Board,” said Middleman. “In addition to more in-depth commercial lending and deposits topics, we’re providing some much-needed training to help deepen the knowledge and comfort level of those team members.” These sessions include:

  • How to “Speak Commercial Services” for Branch Staff
  • What Your Board and Business Loan Committee Need to Know
  • Commercial Lending for Executives
  • Enhancing Credit Union Auditors’ Knowledge of Commercial Lending

To accommodate these different perspectives and roles, CUBG is offering a Full Team pricing option where the credit union pays one bulk fee for unlimited access. “It is important to offer a cost-effective option for this education to reach throughout the credit union. Our Full Team option allows Board members or executives to attend a single session at no extra cost.”

CUBG has also discounted registration fees for today’s tough economic times. The CUSO expects more than 300 attendees for the virtual conference which will take place October 28-29. Sessions will also be recorded for those that are unable to attend the live presentations.
