MADISON, Wis. * The Credit Union Executives Society*s online learning tool for volunteers, CUES Director Education Center, increases knowledge by as much as 38%, recent comparisons of pre-learning and post-learning testsdemonstrate.

*In December, 2008, we added pre-tests to CUES Director Education Center, so we could track learning results,* said Fred Johnson, CUES president/CEO. *Onaverage, users scored 66% on tests before taking the course. We were pleased to find, after going through the lessons, the score jumped to an average of 91%.*

CUES Director Education Center is an online learning tool specifically designed for board members. Test scores showed improvement across all courses. Examples include an increase of 39% for the course The Role of the Board in Monitoring Credit Union Performance*from an average of 67% on the pre-test to 93%; and, an increase of 44% for the course The Role of the Board in Establishing an Effective Risk Management Framework*from 62% on thepre-test to 89%.

*The NCUA board is currently looking at mandating credit union board learning with an eye to standards,* said Johnson. *Paul Peterson, associate general counsel at the NCUA, addressed CUES* Directors Conference attendees last week. Peterson said the proposed ruling states directors should have atleast a working knowledge of basic finance and accounting practices, including the ability to read and understand the institution*s balance sheet and income statement. Directors themselves are responsible for the credit union*s direction*and that is a point that is on-delegable.

*The CUES Director Education Center test results demonstrate it is a proven resource credit unions can turn to in meeting director education requirements. It also offers convenient, budget-friendly, effective learning,* said Johnson.

CUES Director Education Center includes 12 in-depth courses written by governance experts. Sessions can be read online, or printed out. It is free for CUES Director members and members of the Center for Credit Union Board Excellence (CCUBE), Powered by CUES.
