CUNA, CCUL thank Rep. Deborah Ross for “standing up for privacy” in digital advocacy campaign

WASHINGTON, DC (March 14, 2022) — The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) with support from the Carolinas Credit Union League, is running a digital advocacy campaign through mid-March that invites Congresswoman Deborah Ross’s (NC-02) continued support in protecting the financial privacy of North Carolinians.

The ads, funded through CUNA’s National Advocacy Fund, prompt consumers in Rep. Ross’s district to send a message of thanks to her for championing North Carolina credit unions and the millions of middle-class families they serve every day.

“Congresswoman Ross is a watchdog for North Carolina consumers,” part of the message states. “She supports not-for-profit credit unions providing low-cost financial services and low-interest loans to people in underserved communities across our state. She knows ensuring access to affordable financial services is critical for our families and small businesses to thrive.”

In 2021, when federal officials proposed giving the IRS new powers to track transactions in and out of consumers’ personal credit union or bank accounts, Congresswoman Ross opposed the IRS proposal, citing significant privacy concerns.

Her efforts then and continued focus today on the economic future of families in North Carolina are why the League endorses this effort by CUNA to shine a light on Ross and raise awareness among her constituents on how she’s stepped up to protect them.

“Congresswoman Ross has long been an advocate for North Carolinians of all means, especially modest means, since her days in the North Carolina legislature,” said Evelyn Hawthorne, CCUL VP of Governmental Affairs. “As she transitioned to Congress, that dedication grew and the League acknowledged her dedication by supporting her campaign in the early days. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her to advance credit unions in their mission to serve North Carolinians.”
