CUNA Compliance Award recipients announced

WASHINGTON, DC (September 14, 2016) — Credit union compliance excellence will be recognized at CUNA Regulatory Compliance School to be held September 25-30, 2016 in Tempe, Ariz. Bert Beaulieu, vice president compliance of Down East CU in Baileyville, Maine; and Universal 1 Credit Union in Dayton, Ohio were selected as the first winners of the CUNA Compliance Awards, new honors that recognize outstanding achievements in credit union compliance management.

“By combining their regulatory expertise with innovative practices and skillful operational strategy, we could not have chosen a finer group of inaugural recipients for these awards,” said Tracy Blaske, Director of Compliance Education, CUNA. “Both of these winners serve as role models when working through the tough compliance challenges our industry faces.”

Beaulieu received CUNA’s 2016 Compliance Champion of the Year Award, which honors an individual who has offered outstanding compliance leadership. Of Beaulieu, who has more than 41 years of credit union experience, the judges said, “Mr. Beaulieu’s mentoring, leadership and passion for educating other compliance professionals stood out as the exceptional achievements that moved our judging panel.”

Joyce Johnson Keehan, a compliance officer at Hudson Valley FCU in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Elaine Evans, manager of quality control at Marion Community Credit Union in Marion, Ohio, were awarded the Best in Class Compliance Champion of the Year Awards for credit unions with more than $500 million in assets and less than $100 million in assets, respectively.

Universal 1 Credit Union in Dayton, Ohio won CUNA’s 2016 Compliance Impact Award, which honors a credit union who have demonstrated that their compliance efforts had a direct impact on minimizing reputational, financial, or operational loss within their credit union or community. Judges selected the credit union stating, “Universal 1 Credit Union’s proactive, holistic approach to compliance most impressed our judging panel.”

Oregon Community Credit Union in Eugene, Ore. won the Best in Class Compliance Impact Award for credit unions with more than $500 million in assets.

The top two winners receive complimentary registration, travel and lodging for CUNA Regulatory Compliance School, where they will accept their prizes in a live ceremony.
