FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Fort Worth area CUNA Mutual Group employees recently partnered with their sales colleagues from around the country to raise donations for a local charity as part of a national team meeting held here. Those attending the meeting contributed $5,000 along with food donations to Mission Central as part of the company’s continuing commitment to helping disadvantaged families served by the agency.

The funds were raised through friendly competitions held throughout the three-day event, and culminated in a record-setting event donation to Mission Central.

Mission Central is a non-profit, emergency assistance center that supports economically disadvantaged families in Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas, in their journey to self-sufficiency. The organization emphasizes helping feed the hungry, lifting the homeless and making sure kids are cared for in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

At CUNA Mutual Group, it’s all about working with each other and the community, said Dorothy Leaderer, director of customer operations. “As a volunteer at Mission Central, I’ve seen the need first hand, and I’ve seen the families and children that need this help. They’re a part of our area. They’re where we live and work.”

CUNA Mutual Group and its employees have an ongoing relationship with Mission Central. Employees regularly collect food and give their time and money to make a difference.

“We asked our employees, ‘What’s important to us? What do we want to do to make our statement here in the community?’ ” Leaderer said. “And one of the things we selected was donating our time and resources to Mission Central.”

Helping the Dallas-Fort Worth area is important for the people we serve and for the hundreds of CUNA Mutual Group employees who call the area home.

“It’s amazing to know that in a school district, where you were born and raised, there are 800 homeless children,” said DeLania Truly, vice president of sales, CUNA Mutual Group. “Think about that. These are helpless children, they’re homeless and they’re hungry. There are many other children who may not be homeless, but the only meal they get is the free lunch at school.”

CUNA Mutual Group employees squeeze in time to give back. A monthly food drive at CUNA Mutual Group keeps employees on target.

“We serve 320 families at our food pantry each month,” said Paula Jernigan, executive director, Mission Central. “Because CUNA Mutual employees have a monthly food drive for one specific item, we can always depend on that one item to be here in really large quantities.”

“Giving is part of CUNA Mutual Group’s culture,” Leaderer said. “Giving back is important to the community and to us as employees. We’ve sustained a culture of wanting to reach out to help others. I think that’s why we have been so successful.”

In addition to employee donations and time, the CUNA Mutual Group Foundation has given $10,000 annually to Mission Central for the last few years.
