MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Rick Roy, CUNA Mutual Group senior vice president and chief information officer, has been named the 2011 Chief Information Officer of the Year in the Enterprise category by the Wisconsin Chapter of the Society of Information Management (SIM) and the Business Journal of Milwaukee.

Launched in 2010, the SIM Wisconsin awards highlight the significant role of technology, said Jeffrey Melcher, president of SIM Wisconsin and director of technology support and energy delivery at We Energies.

“The CIO of the Year Awards align with the goals of SIM which provide learning opportunities in the management and use of information technology, networking with peers and potential new clients while providing opportunities to further community development,” Melcher said.

Nominations are taken in four categories: Enterprise – more than 1,000 IT users; Corporate – 250 to 1,000 IT users; Emerging Business – below 250 IT users; and nonprofit. Nominations are independently scored by a panel of senior-level IT professionals.

“Our goal is to recognize top technology leaders in Wisconsin who not only achieved their company’s goals, but also demonstrated a commitment to developing their teams and giving back to the community,” said Melcher. “There was an extremely high degree of uniformity in the individual judging to select Rick as this year’s award recipient in our Enterprise category.”

Under Roy’s leadership, CUNA Mutual Group has received several prestigious industry awards, including the CIO 100, InfoWorld 100, Insurance Networking News’ INNovators award, and InformationWeek’s 500 Most Innovative IT Organizations. Roy has been personally recognized as one of Insurance & Technology’s Elite 8 for his vision, innovation, and leadership in the insurance industry.

“Rick believes IT should translate business challenges into technology solutions to help the business grow and compete,” said Bob Trunzo, CUNA Mutual Group executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This clear alignment helps the IT organization speed up decision-making, improve agility, and drive tangible financial results.”

Recognized with Roy at an awards breakfast Tuesday, were co-winners Ivan Imana. Adelman Travel Group (Emerging Business), and Rodeina Davis, Blood Center of Wisconsin (Nonprofit). There was no winner in the Corporate category.
