CUNA Releases International Credit Union Day Video from President & CEO Bill Cheney

Madison, Wis. (October 16, 2012) — On Thursday, October 18, credit unions around the world celebrate International Credit Union Day, an event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. Bill Cheney, President and CEO of CUNA, extends his greetings and applauds the efforts of those who work in the credit union movement.

“This is a great time for all of us to be associated with credit unions,” says Cheney in a video greeting. “We have so much to be proud of on this International Credit Union Day, not only in the United States but all across the world.”

The credit union movement has recently experienced its strongest growth in 13 years, explains Cheney. “In fact, in the 12 months that ended on June 30 of this year, almost 2.2 million people joined credit unions—and that’s a net number.”

Cheney goes on to highlight this year’s achievements for credit unions. “In the U.S., we’ve passed a number of milestones this year,” he says. “We passed $1 trillion in assets and 95 million members, all because of the great work that you all do every day helping credit union members.”

Leagues, credit unions and industry partners are invited to share his video with staff and volunteers or view it on CUNA’s website.

Credit unions have celebrated International Credit Union Day on the third Thursday of October since 1948. The day reflects upon the credit union movement’s history and promotes its achievements. It is a day to recognize the dedication of those working in the credit union industry, appreciate current members and invite eligible consumers to join.

Offer ICU Day greetings of your own and share your celebration stories online, via Twitter with the hashtag #ICUDay or on Facebook.
