DCUC advocates for Defense Credit Unions

WASHINGTON, DC (December 10, 2018) — The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) has had an exceptional week! On Monday, DCUC, the nation’s leading expert for defense credit unions, announced its new Military Advocacy Committee that will help shape and guide the conversations on hot button issues such as the Military Lending Act, GAP insurance, and no cost land leases.

Defense credit unions have an important voice and perspective on the issues affecting military families and the defense credit union industry. This experience has been forged by their long history of serving their military memberships and needs to be heard by legislative and regulatory decision makers. The new committee will serve as a focus group for this initiative.

On Tuesday, The Hill, published an interview featuring DCUC President and CEO, Anthony Hernandez, discussing his background as a retired military veteran, his new role at DCUC, and his plans moving forward to advocate for defense credit unions and the military families they serve.

In the article, Hernandez discussed the newly announced Military Advocacy Committee. “We’re very well-known in our small, tiny circle, but we’ve never really gone out beyond that,” said Hernandez. “I think I’d be better representing our members if we had a higher public profile.”

Hernandez also discussed how DCUC’s 180 credit union members serve the military and how DCUC promotes financial education for military members, with a particular focus on the DoD’s new Blended Retirement System. “We don’t advocate that they should go in or should stay in, but at least give them information to make a choice,” said Hernandez.

To complete a very successful week, Hernandez, participated in a panel at the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL)  Winter Meeting discussing how credit union leagues could leverage six partnerships (DCUC being one of the six) to increase the league’s effectiveness and/or efficiency.  Hernandez said, “I see DCUC as adding to legislative efforts by translating credit union issues into a military impact. We should be “additive” and not “competitive” with our trades”.
