DCUC supports overseas defense credit unions

WASHINGTON, DC (May 28, 2019) — The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) recently concluded its 2019 Overseas Sub- Council Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, which provided education, advocacy, and professional networking for overseas Defense Credit Unions to better serve our servicemembers and their families stationed abroad.

There is a significant need for the overseas sub-council and a strong purpose due to force structure and the unique
nature of more than 450,000 servicemembers and their families currently stationed overseas. Our military and their
families rely on defense credit unions to support their financial needs while living thousands of miles from their home base.

Defense credit unions provide military and civilian members day-to-day financial services to include the ability to make deposits and cash checks that enable them to live on the economy and fill the gap for overseas expeditionary missions when serving down range.

While at the conference, DCUC Overseas Credit unions and leaders from Overseas DoD Commands networked and
shared their insights on the latest issues and activities regarding our servicemembers serving abroad as well as a loot at the future of these important overseas missions.

The United States Armed Services are actively considering expanding its footprint to Eastern Europe (Poland) which
would be a strategic shift but also a signal of our commitment to that region. Last fall, DCUC President and CEO Anthony Hernandez introduced DCUC and its 2018 accomplishments at Poland’s National Association of Co-operative Savings and Credit Unions (NACSCU) sponsored by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). Hernandez provided Polish credit unions with insights of having an organizational strategy and how to grow stronger in the age of regulatory changes.

Currently, six defense credit unions serve our overseas population and volunteer at their own expense to provide
financial services to those who serve our country. DCUC recognizes the importance of oversea councils and remains very engaged with senior DoD officials to preserve our ability to meet the global need of our military and their mission.
