Democracy FCU donates $500 to Christ Church
ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 24, 2020) — Democracy Federal Credit Union donated $500 to Christ Church, located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Democracy FCU’s relationship with Christ Church began in early 2020 as a partner to help address financial literacy needs in/around the Alexandria community. As needs changed and increased due to Covid-19, our relationship increased with it. “We are excited to donate to Christ Church for the benefit of the Lazarus Ministry. Anything that we can do to further their good work, especially during this time of need, helps make our community stronger,” said Ken Cahoon, Democracy FCU CEO/President.
Feeding the hungry is not selective to a faith denomination, it is also a communal awareness that is heightened during times such as these. Democracy FCU realizes the importance to contribute, as we are also not immune to the hardship caused by Covid-19. The amazing work done through the Lazarus Ministry has allowed Democracy FCU to directly support other key players in the metropolitan area to fight against food deficiencies. We were delighted to donate to a great partner and a ministry that helps so many others in the areas that we serve. “It is great to have Democracy FCU as partners,” stated Melanie Gray, Director of Outreach & Mission at Christ Church.
At Christ Church, Lazarus Counselors share Christ’s love and mercy with residents in the City of Alexandria who are in crisis situations by addressing the immediate needs of the individuals seeking assistance. Neighbors visit Christ Church weekly seeking help to cope with financial, health, and family crisis. Lazarus volunteers live out their call as disciples by opening doors to all who wish to enter. Christ Church provides generous aid to the community in which it serves. During the coronavirus, the Lazarus ministries have adapted their services. Christ Church parishioners began delivering groceries and/or grocery store gift cards to those in need on May 1. Since then, volunteers have delivered to 299 households, reaching 1,048 individuals. Lazarus financial counselors return an average of 13 phone calls a day to hear the stories of those who need help with rent, food, or utilities, and discern whether the church can help pay a bill. Christ Church distributes funds to the community alongside ALIVE! and other community partners.
The COVID-19 pandemic has a negative financial impacted for most homes in the nation as well as left many without food to feed their families. It has become Democracy FCU’s on-going mission to support our community by going beyond the traditional needs of banking by providing financial solutions to fight the need of hunger in our backyard.
