First Capital FCU Volunteers with Junior Achievement to Provide Financial Literacy to Students
York, PA – On Friday, December 7, 2012, two employees from First Capital Federal Credit Union volunteered as financial advisors for Junior Achievement’s, The Challenge at Finance Park™. The Finance Park simulation focuses on financial literacy. Each student is given a life scenario which includes his/her age, job, salary, family status, etc. Students then choose a vehicle, a home to rent, a cell phone plan, and furniture to purchase, among others. The goal is to budget their money to live within their means. They had to make hard hitting, real financial decisions on the fly. “It was really interesting to see the decisions each student made,” said Tara Houser, First Capital FCU’s Marketing Director. “At times the volunteers had to question whether the decision that was made was the best one and help guide the student down a different path.”
Each volunteer worked with 3 to 4 students. Friday’s group was Sophomores and Juniors from Dover High School. The students arrived at 9:00 a.m. and the day wrapped up around 1:00 p.m.
