Four Fairfax Public Schools Receive Partner Grants from Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation
HERNDON, VA (July 23, 2013) — Strong local schools make strong local communities, and Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation continues to support both through its annual Fairfax County Public Schools Partner grants.
This summer, the Foundation awarded $20,000 in total grants to its four business partnership schools. The recipients include Louise Archer Elementary in Vienna, and three schools in Herndon: Dranesville Elementary, Rachel Carson Middle School and Herndon High School. The grants will be used for advancing school technologies and providing professional development opportunities for teachers and staff.
“Support from NWFCU allows our students to experience hands-on, interactive learning and our staff to attend cutting-edge conferences in the fields of math and reading education,” said Kathy Manoatl, Principal at Dranesville Elementary. “In addition, our partnership with NWFCU plays a major role in the mentoring of individual students; NWFCU employees serve as strong role models/mentors to a chosen group of students and support these children by visiting them on a regular basis at school in order to listen to students create personal goals and address personal concerns.”
In 2004, Dranesville Elementary School was the Foundation’s first Fairfax County Public Schools Business Partnership formed. Since that time, the Foundation has given $145,000 in total grants to its school partners. Past awards have been used to upgrade computers and software, purchase smart board technology for classrooms, and fund the costs for staff and teacher trainings.
“Our partner schools play an important role to many of children and families in the area, and we are proud to offer them our support,” said Linda Rogus, NWFCU Foundation Executive Director. “The schools use these grants to improve the teaching environment for both students and teachers, so it’s a true win-win for all.”
Manoatl agrees. “The partnership provides financial resources to help us create 21st century classrooms where we serve students in meaningful and creative ways to support individual student thinking and achievement.”
