Georgia United Credit Union School Crashers makes over Oakcliff Elementary on July 22 & 23

Georgia United Credit Union completed their 3rd annual School Crashers school improvement project at Oakcliff Elementary School on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23.  This summer, Georgia United worked alongside the DeKalb County School System in partnership with community volunteers to provide facility and grounds improvements for Oakcliff Elementary School located at 3151 Willow Oak Way in Doraville. Oakcliff was chosen from among hundreds of nominations from schools across the state to receive the Georgia United School Crashers facilities makeover grand prize. Oakcliff Elementary, a Title 1 School, was built in 1965 and has a current enrollment of 740 students and 80 faculty/staff.

Thanks to the Shared Strength and civic pride of over 300+ community volunteers and corporate donors, several significant improvement projects were completed on Friday and Saturday.  Professional crew leaders worked hard for weeks – installing landscaping, repairing and replacing the schools’ entrance signage, painting exterior areas and murals in the cafeteria.  Community volunteers joined in the effort over the final two days to complete the remaining tasks such as painting yellow safety curbing and blacktop games, spreading mulch and pine straw, labeling and sorting books in the media center, painting hallways, mini murals, classrooms and replacing furniture in the student cafeteria.

Georgia United gives special thanks to the following corporate donors & partners:

  • DeKalb County School District– Interior & exterior paint
  • Mohawk Industries– Carpet for Oakcliff & two runner-up schools
  • Coca-Cola– 3,000+ beverages for volunteers
  • Home DepotFoundation – Pine straw & mulch for landscaping
