Gulf Coast Credit Unions Show Consumers They “Make $ense” on International Credit Union Day and Everyday

Fort Worth, TX –  Nineteen credit unions from the Houston and Galveston Chapters of Credit Unions worked together to launch a new cooperative initiative just in time for International Credit Union Day.

“Banks make dollars, not sense.” was the theme of the cooperative campaign developed by Kearley & Co., a strategic marketing and branding firm that has been working with credit unions for over 30 years. The campaign included an interactive mix of social and traditional media. Billboards, t-shirts, web and print ads were utilized in addition to Facebook and Twitter to drive consumers back to the new CreditUnionSense.com website, where they could learn more about the credit union difference and find a local credit union to join.

This unique cooperative campaign took things a step further than just advertising the credit union difference – a week-long series of events demonstrated local credit unions’ commitment to financial literacy and community service. Two educational webinars were held on Wednesday, October 17th along with in-person youth activities, community food drives, and a “Financial Safety & Security Shred Day” with eight different locations during International Credit Union Week.

“Many consumers still don’t understand what a credit union is or realize that they can be a member, so we developed the Credit Unions Make $ense cooperative campaign to engage consumers in a non-traditional way,” said Elisa Rode, President of Kearley & Co. “It was very rewarding to be a part of this initiative and to work with Houston and Galveston credit unions to help forward their message and their reach.”

According to analytics reporting, the CreditUnionSense.com microsite as well as the Facebook and Twitter portals saw significant traffic during ICU week, and participating credit unions expect this will translate into increased membership in their communities in the coming months.

About the Houston_Galveston Co-op Initiative
The Houston and Galveston Chapters of Credit Unions came together in the spring of 2012 to work on a credit union awareness campaign. The vision for the initiative was that Houston and Galveston area credit unions could pool their resources to help spread the message about credit unions as an industry, not as individual credit unions. Participating credit unions joined in these efforts by providing financial support, staff/volunteers, and working to forward the message of the movement.
