Healthcare Credit Union leaders unite to increase opportunities

Two dozen credit unions with a common bond gather at association’s 7th annual conference.

LAS VEGAS, NV (September 30, 2013) — Healthcare Credit Union Association (HCUA), the leading organization of credit unions that represent and serve all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their employees, held its annual conference September 18-20 in Las Vegas. The meeting was a celebration of collaboration among member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives with a common bond and a sharing of opportunities and challenges faced by all credit unions.

“We’re proud of the growth of our membership and the engagement of all the executives that come to this conference,” said Charlie Collura, HCUA board chair and CEO of Healthcare and Municipal Employees’ Credit Union in Ontario, Canada. “We always walk away with tactics to grow our membership and enrich their lives.”

Opportunity Screams, the conference theme, was taken from the title of keynote speaker Tom Asacker’s book Opportunity Screams: Unlocking Hearts and Minds in Today’s Idea Economy.

Interactive Q&A sessions included an NCUA OSCUI update by Martha Ninichuk, Deputy Director of the National Credit Union Association Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives; a regional HCUA meeting led by Carol Bayreuther, CEO of Hartford Healthcare FCU; and “Marketing in Healthcare” by Robert York, Chief Marketing Officer of CalCom Federal Credit Union.

In addition to Mr. Collura, also leading the HCUA are vice chair Shirley Cate, President and CEO of Providence Federal Credit Union; secretary Linda White, CEO of United Health Credit Union; treasurer Todd Nelson, SVP of HealthCare Associates Credit Union; and director at large John Saatela, CEO of CarePoint Federal Credit Union.

A growing organization, HCUA currently has nearly 50 member credit unions in the United States and Canada whose mission is to promote the growth, viability and unity of healthcare credit unions. In addition to the annual conference, HCUA members actively participate in peer-to-peer email discussions on a variety of topics and in the association’s members-only group on LinkedIn.
