House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, is among the seven key lawmakers who have recently joined the speaker slate for the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) 2017 Congressional Caucus, scheduled Sept. 10-13 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.
Brady’s committee last summer released a blueprint of a tax plan aimed at simplification, fairness and global modernization and that is silent on credit unions’ tax-exempt status. NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger met with Brady in January and emphasized the importance and value of the credit union tax exemption to the nation's economy.
In addition to Brady, NAFCU's latest Caucus speaker additions include:
- Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., member of the Senate Banking Committee. Tillis also serves on the Senate Armed Services, Veterans’ Affairs and Judiciary Committees; and the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
- Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., ranking member of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Economic Policy and member of the full Senate Small Business Committee. She and Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., (also on the Caucus slate), wrote CFPB Director Richard Cordray echoing NAFCU's call for a one-year delay in the bureau's revised Home Mortgage Disclosure Act rule. The two also introduced a bill to increase the reporting threshold for open-end lines of credit and closed-end mortgages under the HMDA rule.
- Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., majority whip for the House Financial Services Committee. He also serves on three House Financial Services Subcommittees: Capital Markets, Securities, and Investment; Monetary Policy and Trade; and Terrorism and Illicit Finance.
- Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance, and member of the Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance.
- Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., ranking member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Securities, and Investment and member of the full House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and House Joint Economic Committee.
- Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, member of the House Financial Services Committee and its Subcommittees on Housing and Insurance, and Oversight and Investigations. She is also co-chair of the House Financial and Economic Literacy Caucus.
