Indiana Members Credit Union wins national award

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 22, 2014) — Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU), Central Indiana’s largest credit union, was selected as the First Place winner for the 2013 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award for credit unions of $1billion or more in assets as chosen by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) national awards committee.

IMCU was presented the award at CUNA’s 2014 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Washington, DC during a February 26 reception.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program honors credit unions for their involvement and achievements in community projects and activities.

Dora Maxwell was an original signer of CUNA’s constitution and a tireless organizer of hundreds of credit unions throughout the United States. She also developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked tirelessly with organizations on behalf of the poor.

The Maxwell award is presented to credit unions in eight asset-size categories and a chapter or multiple credit union group category for outstanding social responsibility projects in their communities.  Activities may include: solving core community problems, coordinating supply drives for the needy, raising money or organizing special events for charitable organizations, or mentoring students.

“Early this year, we unveiled our ‘Unite for Good’ initiative, which urges credit unions to come together toward the establishment of a shared strategic vision: ‘Americans choose credit unions as their best financial partner,’” says Bill Cheney, CUNA President and CEO.  “To achieve this vision, we have identified a ‘shared agenda’ for the credit union movement: To remove barriers, create awareness and foster service excellence.  In fact, the winners of this year’s awards are among the vanguard of credit unions that are already pursuing this shared agenda – by employing the credit union philosophy, and by taking on social responsibility projects.  My congratulations and thanks to all who have been honored this year.”

IMCU’s entry portrayed its “People Helping People” philosophy by detailing the success of their 2012 partnership with IPS School #44, Riverside Elementary, which provided over 500 students with school uniforms, shoes and belts as well as donated 1.8 tons of food to the schools food pantry which serves approximately 40 families a month.  Throughout the year, IMCU held fundraising events geared toward helping the children and families at IPS #44.

Ron Collier, president and CEO of IMCU, said, “We are honored to receive such a prestigious award in the credit union industry.  The objective of our year-long partnership with IPS School #44 was to improve the educational and social needs of the students by providing them with the appropriate tools to be successful in their education.  The support we received from our employees for this project was amazing and was the reason for the success of the campaign.”

Indiana Members Credit Union, headquartered on the southside of Indianapolis, Indiana, was founded in 1956 as the Indiana University Medical Center Federal Credit Union on the campus of IUPUI, and has since grown to 25 branches in Central Indiana, offering members a better financial alternative and a full array of products and services.  Traditionally offering better rates on loans and deposits, IMCU maintains true to its roots by “Keeping It Simple” for members.  For more information, please visit IMCU online at www.imcu.org.
