International Credit Union Day Celebrates the Accomplishments of Credit Unions

(New York, NY) October 17, 2012 – Credit unions have continually improved the lives of individuals, families, communities, and countries around the world for generations by providing affordable and secure financial products and services. On Thursday, October 18, the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions will be honoring the work of credit unions by celebrating International Credit Union Day at the Hilton San Francisco.

International Credit Union Day has been celebrated every year since 1927. This year, in addition to celebrating the theme of “Members Matter Most,” the Federation is taking this opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of credit unions whose focus has been on serving underserved communities.

As financial cooperatives that are owned and controlled by its members, credit unions offer safe and affordable financial products and services. The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions represents credit unions that focus their services in low- and moderate-income households and underserved populations. Community development credit unions (CDCU) offer an economic lifeline to low-income communities that have been abandoned by traditional lenders and targeted by high-priced check cashers and predatory lenders. CDCUs also provide a platform to serve the broader community through outreach to disadvantaged populations and neighborhoods, participation in government programs, and partnerships with the private-sector in community revitalization efforts.

During International Credit Union Day, The National Federation of Community Credit Unions will also introduce their new CEO Cathie Mahon to its members and to the credit union community. Cathie Mahon previously served as the Federation’s Policy and Program Director. Prior to her tenure at the Federation, Mahon worked as the Deputy Commissioner for Financial Empowerment with the New York City Department for Consumer Affairs.

International Credit Union Day will be celebrated on October 18th 2012 from 5-7pm in the Financial District of San Francisco at the Hilton Hotel. Join the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions in commemorating the impact and achievements of credit unions around the world.
