Merrimack Valley Credit Union celebrates winners of the James A. Burley Jr. Scholarship

The credit union honored the scholastic achievements of three local students.

HAVERHILL, MA (August 3, 2023)

On Tuesday, August 1, Merrimack Valley Credit Union (MVCU) awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to three local high school and college students. The students were honored with a special ceremony at the credit union’s Waltham office, followed by a lunch with the students, their families and members of MVCU’s senior management team.
The James A. Burley Jr. Scholarship was founded in 2007 by the former RTN Federal Credit Union. Burley Jr. was a passionate member of the credit union community who served on RTN’s board of directors for 39 years and held the position of board chair for 33 years.
To be eligible for the award, students had to be either a current member or a dependent of a current MVCU member. All full-time students are eligible to apply for this scholarship, regardless of their year in school. To complete their application, students responded to the essay question: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received and how did you apply it to your life?   The award is given to three students, with the first-place winner receiving a $5,000 scholarship, second-place winner receiving a $3,000 scholarship and the third-place winner receiving a $2,000 scholarship. This year’s winners are:
  • First Place: Madison Lucchesi of Revere, Mass. Lucchesi will be attending Emerson College this fall.
  • Second Place: Rachel Junta of Wakefield, Mass. Junta will be a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst this fall.
  • Third Place: Kaitlin Rattray of Gloucester, Mass. Rattray will be attending Northeastern University this fall.
“This transition is so exciting for all of you,” said MVCU President & CEO John J. Howard during the reception ceremony. “As you embark on this new chapter, remember that you are building your own legacy and laying the foundation of the rest of your life. We are so proud to be able to support you on this incredible journey.”
